This Week: 1. Wheeler was wrong! 2. Rubbish bag price hike. 3. Clock Tower backs fires. 4. Mud flies? 5. A town with guts. 6. Mixed messages on roading. 7. Youth One Stop Shop holds Forum. 8. Past promises. 9. Attached Pen Pictures. 10. My God says.
1. A couple of weeks ago I told you that some hospital cleaning staff earned about $12.50 per hour for cleaning the hospital…well I was wrong for according to the Manawatu Standard they only earn $11.50 per hour. So I deeply apologise for the error. The cleaners who work for Spotless have been locked out of work at the hospital and it would appear that the Hospital Board is supporting the lockout. The Hospital Board was allocated extra funding to increase wages for all staff and contract staff, what are they using the money for? We have two Councillors on the Hospital Board, Cr. Pat Kelly and Cr. Jim Jefferies you might like to give them a ring and ask them if they support the lockout.
2. The rubbish bag stuff up continues and council staff tells us that the cost per bag is to rise by 25% and will shortly cost $1.25 per bag. According to a council press release this is because you and I are not buying enough bags. I’m not sure if this is for real, for it could just be a sales pitch, what do you think?
3. 122 citizens made submissions to the Council's Resource Consent hearing to put the glass lantern on top of the tower. The Commissioner, Christine Foster, with only 14 submissions in support of Council's plan, saw fit to give consent for the Tower to get the Lantern (Evening Standard September 12 2006). Councillors are now back peddling at a great rate of knots but for once I agree with some of them, the clock tower sure doesn’t look like the Public Relations image shown to the public. But I suppose that’s ‘par’ for the course! For example look at the Square make over. Still as some councillors would say, ‘What the heck, what’s another one and a quarter million on top of the massive city heart project of twenty five million bucks just get on with it". Council staff is never wrong…yeah, yeah.
4. ‘Race begins, mud flies’…according to the Manawatu Standard page three headline on Saturday 14th July 07. Let’s put the headlines aside and look at the item. The question was overspending, as those who read ‘Wheeler’s Corner’ will recall that I was reminding Cr. Naylor that there were rules regarding spending on a campaign, no one was being accused of over spending. What really should concern citizens is where the funding for campaigns comes from. No doubt all candidates would value financial assistance. Of course they can accept donations toward funding their campaign and that is within the law. Both Michael Feyen and the present Mayor Heather Tanguay agree that they don’t wish to accept donations from sources, which could lead to implied obligations later, to my knowledge Cr. Naylor has not commented publicly as yet. The comments from Cr. Naylor regarding checking spending levels after the election with the local electoral officer is true but that’s a little like shutting the gate after the event. While Cr. Naylor mentioned one element of his advertising [Image on bus] he failed to mention other advertising such as newspaper and his citywide mail drop. The real issue at hand is who is funding whom. This is important to citizens to enable them to make wise and sensible choices. The Wheeler’s Corner item had an effect in that Cr. Naylor’s latest ad in the Manawatu Standard now has authorisation. So maybe it jogged his memory…who knows.
5. Remember Eketahuna, that town you pass through on your way to Masterton, well the powers that be took away there ATM [automatic money machine], closed all the banks. Then the local service station closed. Earlier the cottage hospital shut its doors. Well, let me tell you that towns got guts. Eketahuna is now starting its own money exchange. It took over the service station and supermarket and much earlier the community turned the closed cottage hospital into a rest home. Now that’s what I call community action. It proves what can be done. There is a lesson here for all of us. Giving up solves nothing. So while we here in Palmerston North are forced to sit idly by, while the council on our behalf gives us a revamped Square the majority don’t want. Takes away delivered rubbish bags that the majority do want, ceases to fund community groups like the Street Van service, which we do want. And to top it all off, sends us the bill in the form of huge rate increases.
6. Hello Peter
Did you see the turn around in the Square Circular regarding Matipo Street? In the newspaper in March, David Lane [PNCC] said that Matipo Street couldn’t have traffic calming because it was an industrial road after keeping them hanging on for over 2 years saying there was no money, now consultation begins. And how come PNCC can build a bridge over the Manawatu River, near Ashhurst Bridge, that they don’t know how many will use (for sure not 7000), yet can’t build a tunnel under Milson Line that over 7000 people a day use. Do you remember Jono Naylor saying he was for ‘good’ roads to Wellington? When PNCC can’t sort out Tremaine Ave/Rangitikei St which causes traffic to back up from Botanical Road to way past Milson Line and the traffic problems at Ruahine Street/Featherston Street – is this man mad saying those things to Palmerston North residents stuck in traffic here? Regards Val. It’s not for me to comment on Cr. Naylor’s mental abilities! Yes, I read that item in the Square Circular.
7. A chance for youth to speak out regarding their position within our city has arrived. This is a huge change from others speaking about them. For example the Mayoral Forum on booze and youth at which youth could be seen. The Youth One Stop Shop is offering youth a chance to speak for themselves on the issues of the day. ‘Banning Boy Races’, ‘Banning Bebo and Cell Phones’, increasing the drinking age.’ If you are between 12 and 24 years then come along have some fun, have your say, voice your opinion and help make a difference. The event: Palmerston North Youth Forum. The day: Wednesday the 1st of August 2007. The place: The Regent on Broadway. The time: 4.00 – 7.00pm. To register please text 027 342 1122 with your contact number before July 20th to go into the draw to win a cool prize. If you require further information ring YOSS on 355-5906 or go to their website at www.yoss.org.nz Now if your not youth go to website and see just what they do. Support youth to attend.
8. I thought I’d quote a few councillors from the last election, you decide if they’ve lived up to their words:
Cr Wall: ‘I am a team player and believe in the importance of local democracy’…
Cr. Naylor: ‘I’m committed to working with the community’…
Cr. Gordon Cruden: ‘important priorities are…Railway Land reserve investing, improving community and recreational facilities…
Cr. Jefferies: ‘Creating a fairer rating system will be at the top of my list’.
Cr. Hornblow: ‘I will work constructively with other councillors’
9. Attached to this weeks edition is the latest up date of pen pictures of the present councillors, if you are a listener to Wheeler’s Corner you may like to receive a copy. Just contact me via email at wheeler@inspire.net.nz or phone me on 359-2030 or drop me a line at 29d West St Palmerston North 4412. The pen pictures could help you decide whom to vote for free from the public relation dribble.
10. My God says, thanks for noticing Eketahuna, I’ve a few friends there, she added…and I agree with her as I always do.

Johnny Rockaway
For Johnny Rockaway
The gangsters came to play
To throw a rose
into the grave
of Johnny Rockaway
Brando on the screen
so high on his machine
waves a hand to all the fans
along the way
Wear your hair up high
Turn your collar to the sky
No surrender
No sweet goodbye
(guitar break)
For Johnny Rockaway
The gypsies came to pray
to light a bonfire
at midnight
for Johnny Rockaway
Bardot on a motorbike
The chrome so bright
so lost, so lost
in her shades
Wear your hair up high
Turn your collar to the sky
No surrender
No sweet goodbye
