The Redemption of the Talkback Host

So much feedback on puff 621 'Is the Talkback Host a Social Worker' over the weekend. Thanks to all who participated on radio, the net and elsewhere. The connection to the pulpit and to redemption discussed below seemed to get people going.

So many Talkback Hosts are ex alcoholics. And they beat it up. The beating up is the interesting bit.
Paul Holmes, Kerre Woodham, Murray Deaker and D'arcy Waldegrave come to mind.
The 'Beat Up' is a variant of 'I once was lost but now I'm found'. Having seriously strayed in a human way- we are not talking about criminality, this is a matter of self redemption, of getting one's act together- the Host is back on track, back on the rails and in the saddle.
Deaker will repeat the date in 1978 when he gave up alcohol. Waldegrave is counting the days of his dryness on air.
Over a fwo month period in 2007 Waldegrave has moved from celebrating drunken states by making comments on air like, 'I hope I didn't hit on you last night- I have no memory of anything after about eleven o'clock- a great night had by all...' to a blow by blow counting of the dry days.
Is this to do with an inherent religiosity of the Talkback Host? Or of Radio which itself might be a substitute for the sermon?
There must be support for this beating up from producers, station managers and the like. Is there support in the ratings? Are there spinoffs?? Where Talkback Hosts have children with A and D issues as with Holmes and adoptive daughter Millie the media coverage is huge.
Is this part of the Radio New Zealand unofficial quota system. Just as you have the official charter quotas of minorities and females is there an unofficial goal of setting down the myth of the decadent journalist?
Why is this?
Under what circumstances would this kind of thing be fostered and encouraged by a state broadcaster or by any broadcaster for that matter?
